We know that starting out in the big bad world of SEO can be a bit daunting, which is why we thought we’d share some simple tips for beginners looking to get their foot in the door and their website ranked for their chosen keyword, though our SEO company in Surrey know the latter more often than not takes time, patience and a lot of expertise!
Mobile Responsiveness
Despite mobilegeddon happening almost a year ago, there are plenty of SMEs who remain unaware of the sheer importance of mobile responsiveness! Websites that aren’t mobile responsive are given a penalty by Google, and those that do feature responsive design are far more likely to show up in search results for chosen keywords; trust us, it’s almost impossible for your SEO strategy to work if your site just isn’t mobile-friendly!
Furthermore, devices like phones and tablets cannot be escaped from in this day and age, and the majority of Google searches now happen via mobile rather than on PCs, which even aside from SEO factors means that your site needs to be viewable to the average mobile user or you’ll face losing their custom to someone whose site is responsive!
Good Content
You need to ensure that all content on your site is actually worth something as Google does actually score SEO rankings based on quality! Pages with less than 300 words of content look ’spammy’ to Google, and can often take a penalty hit. Of course, some pages like this are unavoidable (for example contact pages) though the use of ‘noindex’ codes can help more non-essential pages, such as 404 and the like.
However, keep in mind that pages you want to be found by search engines should ideally reach a certain length, as well as meet a certain standard of quality; black hat SEO techniques like link farms would often have long pages of complete nonsense, which Google is now able to detect as spam – if your content too closely resembles spambot content and doesn’t seem readable, Google may penalise you and negatively affect your SEO score, so watch out!
